OMRON begins local production of blood pressure monitors in India, with plans to expand its Chennai factory tenfold by 2028 and strengthen home healthcare devices

Japanese medical device maker OMRON Healthcare has started full-scale production at its first manufacturing facility in India, located near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The company plans to increase the factory's production capacity tenfold by 2028 and eventually use the facility to supply international markets. The development could improve the availability of blood pressure monitors in India.

Operated by OMRON Healthcare Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd, the facility is located at ORIGINS by Mahindra and covers approximately 24,000 square metres. It has five production lines dedicated to manufacturing blood pressure monitors for Indian consumers.

Three Blood Pressure Monitor Series to Be Manufactured

The Chennai factory currently produces three product series: HEM-7090, HEM-7181 and HEM-7183T. These models cater to different users, from first-time home monitoring users to consumers looking for additional tracking features.

The HEM-7183T includes Bluetooth connectivity with the OMRON Connect health management app, while the HEM-7181 comes with a trend indicator and memory function. The HEM-7090 is designed for straightforward home blood pressure measurement.

The company is drawing on manufacturing technologies and quality-control practices developed at its facilities in Japan and Vietnam. It also plans to support local component sourcing, workforce development and employment generation.

Expansion Plans Include International Markets

OMRON aims to increase the Chennai facility's production capacity tenfold by 2028. It also plans to develop the factory as a supply base for international markets and introduce manufacturing of nebulisers used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma.

According to a Moneycontrol report, the new facility is part of the company's efforts to expand its local manufacturing operations and strengthen supplies to the Indian market.

Growing Demand for Home Healthcare Devices

The expansion comes as India faces a substantial hypertension burden. OMRON estimates that around 300 million people in the country are living with hypertension, while fewer than 5% of households regularly use a home blood pressure monitor.

The company expects increased local production to support wider access to home healthcare devices and encourage regular blood pressure monitoring. It has operated in India since 2010 and has worked with healthcare professionals and the Indian Society of Hypertension on the country's first home blood pressure monitoring guidelines.

The development also reflects opportunities in the medical device industry in India, where local manufacturing can support domestic supply and create opportunities for future exports. Through its Chennai facility, OMRON plans to strengthen its presence in the Indian market while expanding its manufacturing capabilities.
