A crypto exchange hack has affected $6.3 billion in Binance assets, raising concerns about exchange security and the safety of digital currencies

Binance is investigating a major security incident after approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets were affected. The incident, which could become the largest cryptocurrency theft on record, has brought the risks facing major trading platforms back into focus. The crypto exchange hack has also raised questions about how attackers gained access to internal systems and managed to initiate unauthorised withdrawals.

Compromised Engineer's Laptop Under Investigation

Binance's initial investigation suggested that an attacker gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. According to the exchange, this allowed the attacker to enter a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.

The company later confirmed that investigators had found additional points of breach. However, it reported no evidence of a wallet private key leak and said the incident was not caused by a single employee's permissions.

Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while its teams carried out security checks. The exchange also revoked the affected address authorisation and began working with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence firms to trace the funds.

In its official security incident update, Binance said approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain. The company also promised to cover all losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.

North Korean Hacking Group Suspected

Blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group also associated with the Lazarus Group. TRM Labs said its investigation identified similarities with earlier attacks linked to North Korean cyber operations.

Its investigation into the Binance incident estimated that approximately $6.36 billion had moved from Binance wallets across ten blockchains. The suspected involvement has renewed concerns about organised cybercriminal groups targeting cryptocurrency platforms.

Crypto Market Reacts to the Breach

The incident also unsettled cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin fell by more than 3%, while Ethereum and other major digital currencies recorded declines following reports of the breach.

The incident has placed digital asset security under fresh scrutiny, particularly at exchanges managing large volumes of customer funds. It has also raised concerns about crypto exchange security, including internal access controls, transaction approvals and the protection of systems used to authorise withdrawals.

Binance has said it will publish a detailed technical report once its investigation is complete. The recovery of the remaining assets and confirmation of those responsible are still pending.
