Toy Story 5 reunites Woody and Buzz as Bonnie’s tablet threatens the toys’ place. Pixar’s new sequel hits theaters June 19 with heart and humor
The first trailer for Toy Story 5 has officially landed, reuniting Woody and Buzz Lightyear for Pixar’s highly anticipated fifth chapter in the beloved franchise. The new film dives into a timely theme—kids’ growing obsession with technology—while delivering the humor and heart fans have cherished for decades.
In Toy Story 5, the toys face a new kind of rival: a tablet called “Lilypad,” voiced by Greta Lee. When 8-year-old Bonnie receives the device, her attention begins to drift away from her toys and toward the glowing screen. The trailer shows how this shift deeply worries Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, who fears they are losing Bonnie to technology.
Toys vs. Technology
The emotional core of Toy Story 5 revolves around the clash between traditional play and modern tech. “Toys are for play, but tech is for everything,” Woody (Tom Hanks) says in the trailer, summing up the central conflict. Jessie confides in him, admitting she feels Bonnie slipping away because of the device.
The Lilypad not only distracts Bonnie but also keeps her from forming real-life friendships. As the toys realize the impact of the tablet, Woody and Buzz must once again team up to protect their place in Bonnie’s world. Buzz (Tim Allen) delivers a nostalgic moment in the trailer, greeting Woody with, “It’s been too long, cowboy.”
Humor and Heart Return
True to form, Toy Story 5 balances emotional storytelling with playful humor. The film pokes fun at Woody’s age, with Trixie (Kristen Schaal) joking that he needs a brown marker to fix his bald spot. When the Lilypad asks if Woody is an “old man toy,” Forky (Tony Hale) hilariously adds fuel to the fire.
Additional voices include Conan O’Brien and Ernie Hudson, expanding the already star-studded cast.
A Legacy That Keeps Growing
The original Toy Story premiered in 1995 and changed animation forever as Pixar’s first full-length feature. The franchise has since become a box office powerhouse. Toy Story 4, released in 2019, crossed the $1 billion mark globally and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Andrew Stanton, known for directing Finding Nemo and WALL-E, returns as writer and co-director alongside Kenna Harris, with Lindsey Collins producing.
With its blend of nostalgia, humor, and a modern message about balancing play and technology, Toy Story 5 is shaping up to be one of Pixar’s biggest releases yet. The film hits theaters on June 19, promising another emotional journey with everyone’s favorite toys.
