Akwamu chiefs support the Atimpoku Smart City Project, a sustainable urban plan merging technology, culture, and green innovation for community growth
The chiefs of the Akwamu Traditional Area have pledged full support for the Atimpoku Smart City Project, a vision for urban development that seeks to convert Atimpoku into a sustainable, technology-driven, and culturally enriched city.
Traditional Support for Modern Transformation
Atimpoku's Smart City Project, adopted by GSCD in cooperation with the Asuogyaman District Assembly, merges modern infrastructure with rich cultural heritage and care for the environment. This project will see a vibrant city space where residential, industrial, and green zones come together, making this city a center of investment, jobs, and innovation.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on Sunday, 18th October 2025, the District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman, Hon. Godwin Bobobee, described the project as marking a defining moment in the development journey of the district.
Mr. Bobobee said the Atimpoku Smart City Project would not only transform the physical environment but also unlock new socio-economic opportunities for the people. It also aligns with the broader goal of the government in attracting investors, stimulating local industries, and reducing unemployment.
Stakeholder engagement and collaboration
The meeting drew together traditional rulers, members of the district assembly, landowners, and representatives from key government bodies that included the Town and Country Planning Department, the Lands Commission, and the Survey Department. Discussions were held on urban planning, land validation, and setting up a framework for collaboration among stakeholders.
For the District Chief Executive, the project marks a new beginning for Akwamu: "This project is about building a future that blends progress with tradition. It will position Atimpoku as a model for smart and sustainable cities across Ghana," he said.
Chiefs Pledge Unity and Cooperation
Nana Kwaku Budu Akomeah V, Benkumhene and Aduanahene of the Akwamu Traditional Area and Chief of Atimpoku, reaffirmed the chiefs' commitment towards ensuring the success of the Atimpoku Smart City Project.
"We welcome this project with pride and enthusiasm," he said. "Atimpoku has always been a bridge between heritage and progress. This initiative gives us a chance to honor that legacy while preparing for a more sustainable future."
He explained further that the chiefs and people of Akwamu are ready to work with developers and government agencies to ensure the project benefits the whole community.
A Model for Sustainable Urban Growth
Community inclusion has been placed at the heart of the Atimpoku Smart City Project, said Theo Akofio-Sowah, lead for architecture and engineering on the project. "Lasting transformation only happens when people are part of the process," he said. "The chiefs and people of Atimpoku are the custodians of this land, and their guidance will shape a city that reflects their values and aspirations."
The Atimpoku Smart City Project is intended to set standards for sustainable and inclusive urban development in Ghana, using smart technology, green innovation, and the preservation of culture to create a new future for Atimpoku and the District of Asuogyaman.
