Tata Motors is the leader of electric vehicles, and it is all ready to strengthen that further in the near future. The automotive giant is all ready to launch the highly anticipated Tata Harrier EV on June 3, its sixth consumer electric car. Following its first unveiling at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo and after numerous public road trials, the electric version of the Harrier SUV is now all ready to hit Indian showrooms.
The Harrier EV was initially showcased as a concept at the Auto Expo 2020, and in recent months, there has been so much hype with spy shots, teaser videos, and feature releases. With the launch date looming near, here's what we know about the much-awaited electric SUV.
A Real Electric SUV: Based on Tata's Acti.ev Platform
While it appears nearly identical to its internal combustion engine (ICE) cousin, the Harrier EV is based on Tata's state-of-the-art Acti.ev Gen 2 electric vehicle platform. Built from the ground up for electrification, the platform has improved battery packaging, safety, and efficiency.
From a styling perspective, the Harrier EV has an electric car-like close front grille, split headlamps with LEDs, sequential turn indicators, and fresh bumpers with fresh skid plates. It's sporting new aerodynamic alloy wheels and has a tidy charging port on the right-hand side.
High-End Interiors and Future-Focused Features
Internally, the Harrier EV will be loaded with a tech-laden, premium experience. The Stealth Edition will have a blacked-out interior, while the regular models will have a dual-tone dashboard. A massive 12.3-inch Harman infotainment display and a 10.25-inch all-digital instrument panel will be the technology highlight.
The other things to look forward to are wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10-speaker JBL audio system, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats with climate control, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting. Tata has also equipped the SUV with vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging features — perfect for charging appliances or helping other EVs in need.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety has taken top priority in the Harrier EV by Tata. It would have 7 airbags, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, emergency braking, and others — and it would be among the safest mid-size EVs in India.
Power and Range
Though official full specifications have not been revealed yet, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup has been confirmed by Tata. Latest teasers saw the Harrier EV traversing a quite steep 34-degree incline, showcasing some serious off-road capability.
The SUV will produce around 500 Nm of torque and will have a range of well over 500 km on a single charge. Although we have no information on the battery capacity, these numbers suggest Tata is aiming at a new benchmark for the segment.
Competitors and competitive pricing
The Harrier EV will have to be priced between Rs 22–23 lakh (ex-showroom), which will position it to directly challenge Mahindra's future XUV.e9 and XUV.e7. Tata's past practice of going aggressively low on pricing has been successful and will be successful this time as well, and will absolutely appeal to urban professionals and EV enthusiasts.
Final Word: Tata Motors Is the Leader of Electric Vehicles in India
With the Harrier EV, Tata Motors is the leader of electric vehicles, which is unmatched with a portfolio that spans several segments — from hatchbacks to premium SUVs. The Harrier EV not only expands Tata's presence but also sets a benchmark for Indian customers for what an electric SUV made in India can offer.
As we await the official roll-out, here is something that we can be certain of: Tata Motors is India's EV champion — and the Harrier EV is a big leap into the era of green mobility.
