healthcare and medical devices

In the first for India's neuro and orthopaedic rehabilitation, UK medical devices manufacturer Sky Medical Technology — parent to Firstkind — has announced that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Hospital has added its game-changing geko™ device to standard physiotherapy treatment protocols. This achievement positions Sky Medical Technology as a global leader, extending its reach way beyond Western healthcare systems.

BMC Hospital Launches geko Device: Rollout for Stroke and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation

BMC Hospital, India's largest public network of health care facilities, initiated the use of the geko device in all its physiotherapy programs to assist stroke and orthopedic surgery patients. The device has also been effective in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in medically ill and bedridden patients — an ideal target in acute care and long-term hospitalization settings.

How the Geko Device Works: A Revolutionary Wearable Rehabilitation

The geko device, one of the products of this new medical devices manufacturer, is a wearable, self-adhesive, and light neuromuscular electro-stimulator. It is worn just below the knee and delivers mild electric pulses to the common peroneal nerve. It mimics natural muscle movement in the foot and calf and enhances blood flow to levels similar to 60% of walking. It is life-saving for bedridden or otherwise immobile patients.

Quicker Recovery, Home Use, and Reduced Costs: A Triple Benefit for BMC

Dr. Haridas Rathod, Chief Medical Officer, BMC, also praised the device's efficiency, saying, "Fundamentally, at the heart of physiotherapy is the need to optimize a patient's functional capacity, to promote independence, and simply to add quality of life. The geko device does all three."

He illustrated how the device facilitates therapy to start sooner after stroke and surgery, and also enables rehabilitation to continue in the home environment. "Its simplicity allows patients to take charge and self-rehabilitate," he continued, adding also that it minimizes the demand for intensive one-to-one therapist intervention, which means cost savings for the BMC hospital group.

Indian distributor Curamatix celebrates a "Milestone Moment"

Curamatix Healthcare, the Indian distributor of the geko device, called the integration a "milestone moment." Directors Ramen Mukherjee and Subhodeep Mukherjee said, "The successful integration of the device into BMC Hospital's physiotherapy programmes is a major milestone that demonstrates the versatility and efficacy of the device in assisting stroke and orthopaedic rehabilitation."

Sky Medical Technology's Global Expansion Finds Footing in Asia

The product is not limited to cities in India. Curamatix is planning to distribute the product to other states in India, and it can potentially distribute the geko device to rural hospitals where post-operative care and physiotherapy are unavailable. Through the ability to have patients recover at home, the geko device can potentially bridge the gap in access to good care for millions.

Sky Medical Technology CEO and Founder Bernard Ross had this to say as well: "By complementing other treatments to perfection, the geko device not only minimizes recovery time, but also empowers patients to take control of their own rehabilitation."

India Becomes a Growth Market for Intelligent Medical Devices

This further solidifies the increasing global reputation of Sky Medical Technology as a global medical devices manufacturer producing user-focused, cost-effective, and efficient solutions to difficult healthcare issues.

As hospitals across the globe continue to look for methods to deliver improved outcomes on limited budgets, technologies such as geko demonstrate a vision for a future in which intelligent, wearable technology drives human healing — and Sky Medical Technology is at the forefront.

As India becomes a hotbed of medical innovation adoption, such cooperation can perhaps be the precursor to an even larger movement: international cooperation between regional healthcare infrastructures and medical device manufacturer coming together to provide high-impact, scalable solutions. In the near term, however, Sky Medical Technology and the geko device are making a good first impression—one gentle pulse at a time.
