The new Star Fox Switch 2 game launches June 25 with upgraded graphics, online multiplayer battles, co-op gameplay, and classic Star Fox 64-inspired action
Nintendo has officially announced a brand-new Star Fox Switch 2 game, marking the franchise’s first major release in nearly a decade. The surprise reveal came during a special Nintendo Direct presentation on Wednesday, where legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and producer Yoshiaki Koizumi introduced the upcoming title for the Nintendo Switch 2 console.
The new Star Fox Switch 2 game is heavily inspired by the classic Star Fox 64, which originally launched in 1997 for the Nintendo 64. Nintendo confirmed that the game will feature a massive graphical overhaul while staying faithful to the fast-paced rail shooter gameplay that made the original a fan favorite.
Familiar Characters Return with Updated Visuals
Players will once again take control of Fox McCloud and his team, including familiar characters such as Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi. The updated visuals give the characters a more realistic and detailed appearance while preserving the nostalgic feel of the franchise.
Nintendo also added new cinematic cutscenes to modernize the storytelling experience while keeping much of the original game’s routes and mission structure intact.
Online Multiplayer and Co-Op Features Unveiled
One of the biggest additions in the new game is online multiplayer support. Nintendo revealed a new Battle Mode featuring intense 4v4 dogfights. Gamers will also be able to enjoy local multiplayer through GameShare or connect online using GameChat functionality.
The upcoming title will additionally introduce cooperative gameplay mechanics. In co-op mode, one player pilots the iconic Arwing spacecraft while another acts as a gunner using the new Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for aiming and shooting. These modern gameplay features are expected to bring a fresh experience to longtime fans of the series.
Release Date Confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo confirmed that the Star Fox Switch 2 game will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25. However, the company has not yet announced pricing details or pre-order information.
The announcement follows renewed interest in the franchise after Fox McCloud made a cameo appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this year. In the film, Fox was voiced by Glen Powell and helped Mario and friends travel across the galaxy.
A Look Back at the Star Fox Legacy
The Star Fox franchise first debuted in 1993 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and became known for pioneering 3D graphics using Nintendo’s Super FX chip. Over the years, Nintendo released several sequels including Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox Command, helping establish the series as one of Nintendo’s most iconic space shooter franchises.
