DFW flight delays worsened after the FAA issued ground stops at DFW Airport and Love Field as severe thunderstorms moved across North Texas
Severe weather moving across North Texas triggered major travel disruptions Tuesday after the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at both Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field. The FAA temporarily halted incoming flights as thunderstorms intensified across the region, creating long delays and widespread flight cancellations.
Hundreds of Flights Canceled at DFW Airport
The developing DFW flight delays quickly impacted thousands of travelers, especially at DFW Airport, the primary hub for American Airlines. According to aviation tracking data, more than 400 flights had already been canceled at DFW by Tuesday afternoon. Departures were delayed by an average of 90 minutes, with officials warning that delays could continue increasing as the storm system moved south across North and Central Texas.
Love Field Faces Delays Amid Thunderstorm Threat
At Love Field, home to Southwest Airlines operations, the situation was slightly less severe. The FAA reported average departure delays of around 30 minutes, while approximately 55 flights had been canceled. Even so, the airport continued to experience growing congestion as passengers monitored changing schedules and weather alerts.
National Weather Service Warns of Strong Storms
The rising number of DFW flight delays comes as the National Weather Service warned residents about severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and possible hail across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Weather officials said a cold front pushing through the area would continue generating strong storms throughout the day.
Travelers Urged to Monitor Airline Updates
Ground stops are among the FAA’s most serious traffic control measures because they prevent flights bound for affected airports from taking off until conditions improve. Aviation experts say prolonged DFW flight delays could create ripple effects across the country due to the airport’s role as one of America’s busiest airline hubs. Travelers flying through North Texas were advised to check airline updates closely before heading to the airport.
