Fallout 3 remaster rumours are back after leaks and fan speculation, but an Xbox insider says the long-awaited remake is not coming anytime soon

Rumours about a Fallout 3 Remaster have once again captured the attention of fans, reigniting long-standing speculation around the future of one of Bethesda’s most iconic role-playing games. First released in 2008, Fallout 3 marked a major turning point for the franchise, helping it reach mainstream success and selling more than 12 million copies worldwide.

Since then, titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 have expanded the series’ reach, but many players continue to hope for a modernised return to the Capital Wasteland.

Leaked Documents Sparked Early Speculation

The strongest evidence supporting a potential Fallout 3 Remaster dates back to 2021, when internal court documents surfaced during Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda. Those documents explicitly referenced a remaster of Fallout 3, instantly fuelling excitement within the gaming community.

Fans later drew comparisons to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which appeared in the same documents and was unexpectedly released in April 2025. That shadow drop convinced many players that Bethesda could be following a similar strategy with Fallout.

Steam Anomalies Add Fuel to the Fire

More recently, speculation intensified after some Steam users reported unusual behaviour when attempting to leave reviews for Fallout games. A small number of players encountered messages stating they could not review titles that had “not yet been released,” while others noticed that only 10 of the franchise’s 12 games were searchable on the platform.

These irregularities led fans to believe that backend changes might be connected to a Fallout 3 Remaster, even though Valve and Bethesda have not commented on the issue.

TV Series Timing Raises Expectations

The timing of the rumours has also raised eyebrows. With the season two finale of Amazon Prime’s Fallout television adaptation approaching, many assumed an announcement could be coordinated to capitalise on renewed interest in the franchise.

Such cross-media tie-ins have become increasingly common, further convincing fans that a Fallout 3 Remaster announcement could be imminent.

Insider Pushes Back on Near-Term Release

Despite growing speculation, Windows Central editor and Xbox insider Jez Corden has poured cold water on the rumours. According to Corden, Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters are not expected anytime soon. He suggested that if remasters do happen, Fallout 3 would likely come first—but not in the near term.

As a result, reports claiming a Fallout 3 Remaster is already available on Xbox Game Pass are false. For now, players can access the original versions of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas through the Premium tier of Xbox Game Pass, while other Fallout titles remain available across multiple subscription tiers.
