With Computex 2025 just around the corner, everyone is on tenterhooks waiting for two industry titans — Nvidia and MediaTek — to make an appearance, with rumors rife about a mighty new chip that will revolutionize gaming laptops. As per a ComputerBase report (via PC Gamer), the two firms will release an Arm-based laptop chip at the forthcoming expo, and news of the same is already causing ripples throughout the tech community.
The rumor focuses on the Nvidia MediaTek N1 SoC, a fresh system-on-chip that will introduce Blackwell GPU performance and Arm CPU efficiency to thin, high-performance laptops. This may be the turning point for the Windows on Arm ecosystem, which has yet to catch up with the brute performance of Apple's silicon in the laptop market.
What We Know So Far About the Nvidia MediaTek N1 SoC
This chip is reportedly a miniaturization of the GB10 Superchip — which was earlier demonstrated in Nvidia's Project DIGITS AI supercomputer (now known as DGX Spark). While the initial GB10 was meant for high-end AI workloads and servers, the new one seeks to balance power and portability.
Early reports show that the Nvidia MediaTek N1 SoC will have 8 to 12 CPU cores, much fewer than the 20-core version the whole GB10 is. It may cut down memory support to 16GB or 32GB from 128GB on its desktop counterpart. But the specs may be more than sufficient for gaming, streaming, and content creation tasks on the go.
Benchmark leaks on Geekbench show promising scores, with the chip reaching 3.9GHz, a single-core score of 2,960, and a multicore score of 10,682. They are on par with performance chips in the latest generation but Apple's M4 Max is still a bit more integrated and efficient.
Why It's a Big Deal for PC Gaming
Windows on Arm has gone a long, long way recently, especially thanks to Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite, but gaming has always lagged behind with GPU issues and app support. That's where Nvidia's intervention comes into picture.
The Nvidia MediaTek N1 SoC is said to include 50-series RTX parts such as 5th-gen Tensor Cores and 4th-gen Ray Tracing Cores. This could finally bring real-time ray tracing, DLSS, and high-definition gaming to Arm-based laptops, a huge leap from previous Windows on Arm implementations.
Gaming laptops powered by this chip may provide improved battery life, thinner and lighter form factors, and still be able to play graphically demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Doom: The Dark Ages. That would put the playing field on par with Apple's own efforts using its M-series chips, as games like Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding are already natively supported on macOS.
A Highlight of Computex 2025?
Although nothing is actually on the table yet, all indications are pointing towards a major Computex 2025 announcement. With both Nvidia and MediaTek delivering keynotes, unless things change drastically, we should expect to see the N1 chip officially announced — perhaps with some early demos of prototype laptops or dev kits.
There is also speculation that this chip will come with Microsoft support in the form of Windows 12 optimizations, further optimizing app performance and native compatibility for gaming and productivity.
Final Thoughts
With the tech community gearing up for Computex, the leaked release of the Nvidia MediaTek N1 SoC has already set tongues a-wagging among PC enthusiasts, developers, and gamers. If the chip lives up to its promise, it would mean a paradigm shift in the laptop industry — one where serious gaming no longer depends on legacy x86 platforms.
