iONLINE and Nodle expand IoT asset tracking in South Africa with a decentralized network, enabling low-cost, scalable connectivity and real-time visibility
South Africa's Internet of Things (IoT) sector is set for a major boost as iONLINE Connected Networks and Nodle join forces to expand a decentralized connectivity network designed to improve IoT asset tracking and lightweight sensor deployments across the country.
The partnership combines iONLINE's connectivity expertise with Nodle's decentralized Bluetooth wireless network, creating a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional tracking infrastructure. The initiative aims to help businesses monitor assets more efficiently while reducing the costs typically associated with deploying and maintaining IoT networks.
A New Approach to Connectivity
Unlike conventional IoT systems that rely on fixed gateways and dedicated infrastructure, the Nodle Trust Network uses smartphones as network nodes. These devices capture Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signals and relay data through cellular, Wi-Fi, and future direct-to-cell satellite connections.
This model enables enterprises to verify the location of physical assets in real time, creating a more reliable and affordable solution for IoT asset tracking. As more mobile devices participate in the network, coverage and accuracy improve, creating a large-scale connectivity layer built on devices already in everyday use.
Carel Wessels, Head of IoT Solutions at iONLINE, said the collaboration introduces a fundamentally different way of delivering IoT connectivity in South Africa.
"Together with Nodle, we're enabling a lower-cost, massively scalable solution that provides real-world asset visibility without the complexity and power consumption traditionally associated with tracking technologies," he said.
Expanding Enterprise Use Cases
The network is designed to support a wide range of applications where low-power connectivity and affordability are critical. These include tracking parcels, tools, pallets, spare parts, pharmaceutical shipments, consumer returns, and other valuable assets.
By lowering deployment costs, the partnership opens new opportunities for IoT asset tracking in sectors where monitoring assets was previously too expensive to justify.
The collaboration will also support iONLINE's FlexiTag devices, while allowing compatible third-party BLE tags to operate on the same network, further expanding the reach and flexibility of the platform across South Africa.
