Qatar Airways ends the A380 Sydney route, replacing the superjumbo with Boeing 777 aircraft as the airline adjusts capacity and network operations
Qatar Airways has confirmed that its Airbus A380 aircraft will no longer return to Sydney, ending a decade-long chapter for one of the airline’s most prominent long-haul routes, according to a recent report by Bolt Flight https://boltflight.com/qatar-airways-drops-airbus-a380-service-to-sydney-and-singapore-reshaping-its-long-haul-network/
The decision comes as the carrier continues rebuilding its international network following disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East earlier this year.
The Qatar Airways A380 Sydney route was suspended in March 2026 after the airline temporarily grounded its Airbus A380 fleet during the regional crisis. While the route was originally scheduled to resume on September 16, updated flight schedules now show that the airline will operate Boeing 777-300ER aircraft instead.
A Strategic Shift in Capacity
According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, Qatar Airways operated daily Airbus A380 flights between Doha Hamad International Airport and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport until March 22. The airline completed 81 A380 flights on the route during the first months of 2026 before services were halted.
The replacement of the Airbus A380 with the Boeing 777-300ER represents a notable reduction in passenger capacity. The A380 is capable of carrying significantly more travelers and offers premium features that have made it popular among long-haul passengers.
One of the biggest changes for travelers will be the removal of first-class service on the route. Qatar Airways' Boeing 777-300ER aircraft assigned to Sydney do not include first-class cabins, meaning passengers will only have access to business and economy class products.
Industry observers believe the move reflects the airline’s cautious outlook on demand recovery, despite signs of improving stability across the region.
Sydney's Long Association with the Airbus A380
Sydney has been one of Qatar Airways' most important destinations in Australia since becoming the first Australian city to receive Airbus A380 service from the airline in 2016.
Over the past decade, the carrier operated approximately 2,685 A380 flights between Doha and Sydney. Apart from 2021, when international travel restrictions disrupted global aviation, the route maintained regular operations and became a key connection between Australia and the Middle East.
The Qatar Airways A380 Sydney route was also the airline’s busiest Australian A380 service, highlighting the importance of Sydney within the carrier’s network.
Melbourne and Perth Also Lose Superjumbo Service
Sydney is not the only Australian city to see the departure of Qatar Airways’ iconic superjumbo aircraft.
Melbourne welcomed A380 operations in 2017 and quickly became a regular destination for the aircraft. Meanwhile, Perth saw more than 1,500 A380 rotations between 2018 and 2025, particularly during the strong post-pandemic travel recovery period.
Today, Qatar Airways serves both Melbourne and Perth using Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft, reflecting a broader industry trend toward more fuel-efficient twin-engine jets.
Sydney Remains a Major A380 Destination
Although Qatar Airways is ending the Qatar Airways A380 Sydney route, Sydney Airport continues to be one of the world's leading destinations for Airbus A380 operations.
Emirates currently operates two daily A380 services between Dubai and Sydney, while Singapore Airlines flies the aircraft twice daily from Singapore. Australian carrier Qantas also continues to use its A380 fleet on major international routes including Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, Singapore, and Johannesburg.
The latest decision by Qatar Airways highlights how airlines are increasingly balancing capacity, profitability, and operational flexibility as international travel markets continue to evolve.
