Trump officials and US tech executives use clean phones and secure systems in China amid rising China cybersecurity fears and surveillance risks
Senior officials travelling with Donald Trump to China are reportedly using temporary “clean phones” and restricted electronic devices as part of heightened security measures against cyber espionage, according to a report by Fox News. The move highlights growing concerns over China cybersecurity threats and the risks posed to sensitive US government and corporate data.
The delegation includes aides, security personnel, and executives from major American firms such as Apple, Nvidia, Boeing, Qualcomm, and BlackRock. Officials have reportedly been instructed not to carry personal devices into China, which US intelligence agencies continue to classify as one of the world’s most aggressive cyber surveillance environments.
“Everything Is Monitored,” Security Experts Warn
According to the report, officials are travelling with loaner devices configured with secure software and tightly controlled communications systems to reduce exposure to hacking and data extraction attempts. Bill Gage, former Secret Service special agent and director of executive protection at Safehaven Security Group, told Fox News that briefings begin before the president arrives and stress that “everything is monitored.”
China cybersecurity concerns extend even to charging phones. Federal guidance warns officials against using public USB ports or charging stations due to “juice jacking,” a method where compromised hardware can steal data or install malware onto connected devices.
White House Establishes Secure Communication Zones
Theresa Payton, former White House chief information officer and CEO of Fortalice Solutions, said the US government assumes all digital and in-person communications could be monitored while in China. She noted that officials are often issued “golden image” devices, allowing security teams to detect tampering after travel.
The report also stated that White House communications teams established temporary Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) inside hotels and secure locations to protect sensitive discussions from electronic surveillance. The precautions reflect escalating China cybersecurity tensions between Washington and Beijing as concerns over state-sponsored cyber activity continue to rise.
