Google launches the Google Health AI Coach with personalized fitness plans, sleep insights, and cross-device support to compete with ChatGPT and Microsoft in AI healthcare
Google is taking a major step into the AI-powered wellness market with the launch of its new Google Health AI Coach, a feature designed to turn the company into a personalized fitness and health adviser for millions of users — including those using Apple Watch, Garmin, and Oura devices.
The announcement signals Google’s growing ambition to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft in the rapidly expanding AI healthcare space. The company revealed the updates during its latest health technology showcase on Thursday, positioning the Google Health AI Coach as a digital wellness assistant capable of analyzing fitness, sleep, and health data to provide tailored recommendations.
Fitbit App to Become Google Health Platform
Google announced that the Fitbit app will officially transition into the new Google Health app starting May 19. The redesigned platform will include AI-generated health summaries, customized weekly fitness plans, and chatbot-style wellness support powered by Google’s Gemini AI models.
According to Rishi Chandra, General Manager of Google Health, the goal is to make advanced wellness guidance available to everyday users rather than just elite athletes.
“An athlete today has a whole team doing this,” Chandra said. “They have a nutritionist, a sleep coach, and a fitness trainer. Why can’t all of us have that equivalent?”
The Google Health AI Coach will analyze activity trends and biometric data from connected wearables. For instance, it may detect that a user achieved their weekly running goal or suggest that extra sleep improved recovery metrics.
Fitbit Air and Cross-Platform Support
Google is also introducing a new wearable called the Fitbit Air, a lightweight wristband designed to work alongside the Google Health app. Unlike traditional smartwatches, the device reportedly focuses on passive health tracking without a display.
Importantly, Google plans to expand AI coaching support beyond Fitbit and Pixel devices later this year. The company confirmed it is working on integration with Apple HealthKit and Android’s Health Connect, allowing users to combine health information from different apps and wearables.
“That’s my goal,” Chandra said. “So, you can decide whatever hardware you want.”
AI Health Competition Intensifies
The move comes as competition intensifies in AI-powered wellness services. Samsung, Oura, and Whoop have all recently launched AI-driven fitness insights, while Microsoft introduced Copilot Health earlier this year. OpenAI has also expanded ChatGPT’s health-related capabilities as more consumers rely on AI tools for medical and wellness guidance.
Despite growing interest, experts continue to warn about the limitations of AI in healthcare. Institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and Duke University School of Medicine caution that AI systems can sometimes provide inaccurate or incomplete advice.
Still, Google believes the Google Health AI Coach could help position the company at the center of the future digital healthcare ecosystem.
