United Relax Row transforms economy seats into beds, offering more comfort at lower cost as airlines expand premium travel options
United Airlines has unveiled an innovative seating concept called the United Relax Row, designed to offer passengers more comfort without the high cost of business class. The new feature transforms a row of three economy seats into a lie-flat, bed-like space, targeting families, couples, and travelers seeking extra room on long-haul flights.
A New Kind of In-Flight Comfort
The United Relax Row allows passengers to convert standard economy seating into a couch-style or flat sleeping area shortly after takeoff. Travelers will receive a mattress pad, blankets, pillows, and even a plush toy for children, creating a more relaxed and family-friendly travel experience. Positioned between economy and premium economy cabins, the airline plans to install up to 12 such sections on widebody aircraft.
Strategic Push Toward Premium Revenue
The launch of the United Relax Row reflects a broader strategy by United to expand its premium offerings. The airline reported strong growth in premium revenue, which has outpaced overall earnings. By introducing a mid-tier product, United aims to attract customers who want more comfort than economy but at a lower price than business class.
Global Trend Comes to North America
While similar concepts exist globally—such as Air New Zealand’s Skycouch—United is the first North American airline to introduce this type of seating. The rollout is expected to begin in 2027, with plans to expand across more than 200 Boeing aircraft by 2030.
With pricing yet to be announced, the United Relax Row could become a compelling option for travellers looking for comfort, flexibility, and value in long-haul flights.
