The Federation of Indian Associations celebrated International Women’s Day in New York, honouring Indian diaspora women leaders for achievements in business, media, and social impact
The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) NY-NJ-CT-NE hosted its eighth annual International Women’s Day celebration at India House, recognising prominent Indian diaspora women leaders for their contributions across business, media, finance, and social entrepreneurship.
The event, held on March 6, 2026, brought together community leaders, diplomats, and professionals to celebrate women who have made a significant impact within the Indian-American community and beyond. Organised by FIA, one of the oldest and largest grassroots organisations representing the Indian diaspora across eight Northeastern states in the United States, the annual gathering highlighted achievements that continue to inspire younger generations.
Recognising Inspiring Indian Diaspora Women Leaders
The evening ceremony honoured several Indian diaspora women leaders whose work has influenced industries ranging from healthcare and entertainment to public service. Award recipients received Certificates of Recognition issued by Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York, along with commemorative FIA sashes and trophies.
The program was emceed by Riddhi Parikh Patel, who opened the ceremony with a moment of silence in memory of the late Radha Subramanyam, a past honoree whose contributions to the community were widely respected.
FIA President Sreekanth Akkapalli, who assumed office on January 1, 2026, addressed attendees and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Indian diaspora women leaders who are shaping communities in the United States.
“We are grateful for the incredible contributions women have made to our society,” Akkapalli said, congratulating the awardees on behalf of FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya, the Board of Trustees, and the Executive Committee.
Consul General Highlights Women’s Empowerment Initiatives
The event’s special guest, Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, India’s Consul General in New York, emphasised the importance of women’s empowerment in national development.
During his address, Pradhan highlighted major initiatives launched by the Government of India to support women’s advancement, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao for girl-child education and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which provides clean cooking fuel to households.
He also pointed to economic programs linking millions of households to women-led self-help groups, helping create one of the largest pipelines for women’s participation in public leadership.
Voices from the Community
Several distinguished speakers shared personal reflections during the celebration. Jody Lynne Herkloz, Chief Operating Officer of Northstar Strategies, encouraged women to continue supporting and uplifting one another.
Healthcare executive Balpreet Grewal‑Virk, Senior Vice President at Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health, praised FIA’s long-standing efforts to strengthen the Indian-American community.
Actor Reshma Shetty reflected on cultural heritage and motherhood, while Tania Kinsella, First Deputy Commissioner of the New York Police Department, dedicated her recognition to the women in her family who helped shape her journey.
The evening concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Srishti Kaul Narula, FIA’s General Secretary.
