Malaysia intends to tighten its laws on the export of semiconductors. This is due to the United States' intention to bar high-end computer chips, such as Nvidia chips, from being exported to China.
Trade Minister Zafrul Aziz said that Washington has asked Malaysia to monitor the export of high-end semiconductor components, including Nvidia's AI chips, for fear that they are being exported to China.
“The US is asking us to check every shipment coming to Malaysia when it involves Nvidia chips," Aziz was quoted in the paper. "They are asking us to ensure servers find the right data centers and not find their way on another ship unexpectedly.”
The United States is probing whether Chinese AI company DeepSeek has been using US chips prohibited in its advanced AI models. DeepSeek became popular in January with an AI model that showed capabilities on par with the world's leading companies. Since then, worries have increased about whether the company has obtained prohibited US technology through indirect supply chains.
Malaysia is investigating if local regulations were violated in the export of servers in a Singapore fraud case. Prosecutors in Singapore this month stated that the case concerns $390 million worth of transactions that can be traced to the illicit supply of US servers into Malaysia. Reports say the servers could have included sophisticated AI chips, which are subject to strict US export controls.
Singaporean media has linked the case to the potential sale of Nvidia's AI chips to DeepSeek, sparking concerns about compliance with US trade regulations. Nvidia has not yet made a statement on the issue.
Malaysia's Role in the Semiconductor Supply Chain
Malaysia actively participates in the global semiconductor industry supply chain, particularly in chip backend processing such as packaging and testing.
