Pension credit council tax reduction could help eligible pensioners manage household bills as the UK government urges more people to check their benefits.

Hundreds of thousands of pensioners across the UK are being urged to check whether they can claim Pension Credit. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) says the benefit is worth more than £4,500 a year on average. For eligible older people, it may also open the door to other support, including pension credit council tax reduction.

The department plans to send 660,000 leaflets to households in Glasgow, Powys, Stockton-on-Tees, inland Cornwall, Birmingham, East Suffolk and Manchester. The leaflets explain how pensioners can check their eligibility and apply, as well as how family members can help with a claim.

Around 1.4 million pensioner households already receive Pension Credit, but many eligible people have yet to claim it. Some believe they cannot qualify because they own a home or have savings. However, neither automatically rules someone out. The government has published further details on its official Pension Credit guidance.

Government Launches New Pension Credit Campaign

The campaign is part of the DWP’s Pension Credit Week of Action. Along with the leaflet distribution, the department is using print, television, radio and social media to reach more pensioners. It has also partnered with ITV’s The Chase to raise awareness.

The latest effort follows last year’s biggest-ever Pension Credit awareness campaign, which resulted in an additional 33,500 applications. The government hopes the new drive will encourage more people to check their entitlement instead of missing out because they are unsure of the rules.

Pension Credit provides extra money to eligible people over State Pension age who have a low income. Depending on their circumstances, recipients may also qualify for help with heating costs, housing expenses and other essential bills.

Millions in Support May Go Unclaimed

Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell said too many pensioners were missing out on financial help they were entitled to receive. He encouraged people who think they may qualify to check their eligibility, as the extra money could make a difference to their retirement finances.

Independent Age has also highlighted the number of older people who do not receive the benefit despite meeting the requirements. Morgan Vine, the charity’s Director of Policy and Influencing, said that in 2023/24, more than one million eligible older people on low incomes missed out on a combined £2.5 billion.

The figures show why the government is encouraging pensioners and their families to look into available support. Even those who have never claimed benefits before may find it worthwhile to check their circumstances.

Checking Pension Credit and Council Tax Support

Pensioners can use the government’s Pension Credit calculator to see whether they may qualify. Details on making a claim are available through the official Pension Credit service.

Those who receive Pension Credit should also check whether they qualify for pension credit and council tax support. Council Tax Reduction is a separate scheme administered by local councils, and the amount of help available depends on individual circumstances and local rules. Pensioners can find application information through the government’s Council Tax Reduction guidance.

People who need assistance understanding the rules or completing an application can contact Citizens Advice or Independent Age for guidance.
