MOT test changes 2026 allow certain approved LED bulbs in compatible halogen headlights. Find out what UK drivers need to check
UK drivers who have changed their halogen headlight bulbs to LEDs should check the latest MOT rules. From October 14, 2026, certain approved LED replacement bulbs can pass an MOT when fitted in compatible halogen headlamps. The MOT test changes 2026 also require an approval sticker to be fitted to the vehicle.
Which Vehicles Are Covered?
The rules apply to vehicle classes 3, 4, 5 and 7, including cars and some other passenger and goods vehicles. The replacement bulb must be approved for the existing halogen headlamp. Anyone buying ECE approved LED bulbs should check the product details to make sure the bulb is suitable for their vehicle.
The new allowance excludes class 1 and 2 motorcycles, halogen headlamps converted to use high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs, and complete headlamp units replaced with full LED units. The DVSA's official announcement explains the change.
The Approval Sticker Is Required
Drivers need to ensure that the manufacturer's approval sticker is securely attached to their vehicle. It should be placed in a spot that's easy for the MOT tester to see, like in the engine bay. This sticker must include important details such as the bulb category, variant, rated voltage, ECE approval number, and the manufacturer's name. Plus, it should have a security feature, like a hologram, to keep things legit. When the MOT takes place, the tester will look for the sticker to make sure it's there, legible, and looks authentic. They won’t have to dig through a database or reach out to the manufacturer to verify the approval number. If you've already switched to LED bulbs, it's a good idea to double-check that the sticker is still intact and hasn’t been damaged.
What Can Cause an MOT Failure?
The new rules do not mean every LED conversion will pass. MOT failure reasons include a missing sticker, details that cannot be read, signs of tampering, or information that clearly does not match the fitted bulb. These issues can lead to a failure under the major defect category for an incompatible light source and lamp.
Before buying replacement bulbs, drivers should check that the product is approved for their headlamp. A seller's claim that a bulb is road legal does not automatically mean it meets MOT requirements. The official MOT inspection manual sets out the lighting checks.
The change gives eligible drivers another option when replacing halogen bulbs. However, they still need the correct approved bulb and a valid sticker for the conversion to meet the rules.
FAQs
1. When did the new MOT rules for LED bulbs come into play?
The new rules kicked in on October 14, 2026.
2. Can LED replacement bulbs pass an MOT?
Absolutely! They can pass as long as they’re approved for compatible halogen headlamps and installed according to the guidelines.
3. What could lead to an MOT failure with LED bulbs?
An MOT failure can happen if there’s a missing, unreadable, or tampered sticker, or if the sticker doesn’t match the bulb at all.
4. Do these rules apply to motorcycles?
Nope! Class 1 and 2 motorcycles are not included in these regulations.
5. Where should the approval sticker be placed?
The sticker needs to be permanently affixed in a spot where the MOT tester can easily spot it. The engine bay is a good option for that.
