Jolla launches a privacy-focused smartphone powered by Sailfish OS, offering Android compatibility, enhanced security, and a European alternative to mainstream devices

Finnish company Jolla Mobile has unveiled its latest privacy-focused smartphone, offering a European alternative to Android and iPhone devices. The launch comes as growing concerns over data privacy, digital sovereignty, and reliance on American and Chinese technology have fueled demand for more secure mobile solutions. Powered by Sailfish OS, the new Jolla Phone is designed to give users greater control over their personal data while maintaining compatibility with Android applications.

A Privacy-First Alternative

Founded in 2011 by former Nokia employees, Jolla introduced its first smartphone in 2013 but struggled to compete with global giants like Apple and Samsung. CEO Sami Pienimäki believes the market has changed significantly since then.

"People are now far more aware of data privacy and digital independence," Pienimäki said during the product launch in Helsinki.

The company has already received 15,000 pre-orders since opening reservations in December 2025, with Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands leading demand. Jolla aims to sell between 50,000 and 100,000 devices next year.

Sailfish OS Offers Greater Data Control

Unlike mainstream smartphones, the Jolla Phone runs on Sailfish OS, Jolla's independent mobile operating system. While users can still run most Android apps through Android app compatibility, the phone avoids relying entirely on Google's ecosystem. For example, map links open in OpenStreetMap instead of Google Maps.

The company also plans to expand its ecosystem with privacy-focused cloud storage, VPN services, and AI tools that process data locally rather than sending information to external cloud servers.

Built for Privacy-Conscious Users

The smartphone combines modern hardware with unique privacy features, including a physical switch that can disable the camera, microphone, GPS, and Bluetooth. Other specifications include a 6.36-inch AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G processor, 50MP main camera, 5G support, expandable storage up to 2TB, and a replaceable 5,450mAh battery.

Final assembly takes place at the former Nokia manufacturing facilities in Salo, Finland.

European Technology Gains Momentum

Jolla believes growing interest in European smartphone technology reflects increasing concerns about digital independence. The company has also licensed Sailfish OS for other industries, including automotive manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz.

With consumers placing greater importance on data ownership and security, Jolla hopes its latest device will appeal to users seeking an alternative to mainstream mobile platforms. As demand for secure technology continues to grow, the company believes the privacy-focused smartphone market will continue expanding across Europe.
