Flip Axis Studios, an XR indie developer that has been at the forefront of virtual reality innovation, has just dropped the announcement for Virtual Skate, a multiplayer virtual reality skateboarding game to be released later this year on Meta Quest 3 and SteamVR.
Created to transfer the excitement of real skating into immersive spaces, the Virtual Skate experience packs all the exhilaration with no sprains or bruises.
Innovative 3D Foot Control with Your Hands
The crown of Virtual Skate is its 3D control system, allowing players to control their feet with their hands. This new mechanic is intended to accurately mimic the movements of real-world skateboarding in a VR environment, providing precision and imagination previously unseen.
Physics-Based Illusions without Canned Animations
Unlike other VR skateboarding games that use scripted moves, Virtual Skate uses a physics system. That is, players have total freedom to style out tricks, flip the board, and manage momentum in a way that is natural and aurally pleasing—traits of the sort of innovation you'd anticipate from an XR indie studio.
Multiplayer mode with built-in replay recording
Skating with buddies is always more fun, and Virtual Skate accomplishes that with a multiplayer feature that delivers co-op skate VR sessions. Even better is in-game camera support, where you can record your friends' lines and tricks. That alone would make the game a social media favorite among VR content creators.
Developed by Skater XL creator Jon West
Flip Axis Studios is receiving a huge credibility boost with the addition of Jon West, Easy Day Studios co-founder and lead developer of the popular PC and console game Skater XL. His addition to the team means that Virtual Skate can be the next step in the evolution of the skate game genre—this time in fully immersive VR.
Available Soon on Quest 3 and SteamVR, though no word is yet out on when Virtual Skate officially releases, Flip Axis Studios hints that it will be "soon," arriving on Quest 3 and SteamVR. As XR indie titles continue to innovate on these platforms, Virtual Skate is one of the most highly anticipated titles in development.
