MTN is no longer merely a mobile network operator – it is now a major contributor to the Internet of Things (IoT) development in South Africa. With close to 6 million telemetry subscribers, MTN plays a critical role in developing smart technology solutions far beyond mere mobile services.
MTN began its Internet of Things (IoT) journey using Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology and now boasts a robust and agile platform for smart solutions. The bedrock of this growth is the MTN Connected Things (MCT) CMP platform, which has been developed in collaboration with Eseye. The MCT CMP platform supports critical smart city South Africa and is market-ready, with a formal launch set for the second quarter of 2025.
Leading the Innovation of Smart City
The MCT CMP platform provides a strong foundation for the deployment of sophisticated smart systems across South Africa. Backed by a strong partner ecosystem, MTN integrates across every level of the IoT technology stack — hardware, sensors, software, data analytics, and security — enabling it to provide full-scale, vertically integrated industry solutions.
"Through collaborations with top industry brands, MTN is developing end-to-end IoT solutions that address real-world challenges," said MTN executive Moitra. "We are well-positioned to deliver solutions that address the growing needs of Smart City South Africa development."
Smart Logistics and Intelligent Fleet
One of the major IoT services offered by MTN is the MTN Connected Fleet (MCF) solution, which is at the application level. MCF gives organizations AI-based insights on vehicle operation, driver behavior, asset tracking, and routing planning. The solution is already serving customers in the public and private sectors.
“Our customers are experiencing dramatic gains in fleet efficiency and productivity. We're pleased to provide a solution that provides real, quantifiable value," Moitra said.
Government Partnerships and Intelligent Utilities
MTN's dedication to innovation has positioned it as a strategic partner for government-initiated smart projects. Grateful to the RT-29 transversal contract from the National Treasury, MTN engages directly with municipalities to provide smart water and electricity metering services.
These initiatives are all building blocks towards the overall aim of the Smart City South Africa vision. This vision is to use data to improve services and infrastructure for all. MTN has a great track record and cutting-edge technology, and therefore, it is a suitable partner for government initiatives that are innovative. “We're thrilled to help build smarter, more connected cities in South Africa," said Moitra. "We want to continue to help enable digital transformation at all levels — from hometown towns to national headquarters."
